What are available dates for hunting?  South Dakota’s pheasant season begins in mid October and continues through December.

How much does it cost?  Depends upon group size and length of hunt. A four-day stay would be about $2,000. See current pricing on Reservations Page.

What is included in hunt (fee)? All meals, lodging, refreshments, guiding, dogs, bird processing, airport shuttle from Aberdeen, ammunition and clay birds for target shooting. State sales tax and gratuities are not included.

What size of a group do you serve? Typically, our groups are from four (4) to twenty-four (24). Mark can discuss other possibilities with you.

Can I bring my own dog? Yes, well behaved hunting dogs are welcome; they can be housed in our kennels.  We do have a large group of professionally trained dogs which we will handle for all your hunting needs.

What licensing do I need? A South Dakota small game license is required for each hunter. They are available online. For a non-resident, the cost is around $110 for two five-day periods.

Can children come along? Parents are welcome to bring children who are proficient with a shotgun and who have passed a certified Hunter Safety program.

Where is the hunt? Dakota River Ranch is located in Brown County, South Dakota. The lodge is 14 miles from a commercial airport served by Northwest Airlines and 16 miles from the regional hospital.

Who owns/operates farm? This five generation family farm is owned by a South Dakota farmer who raises corn, beans, and hay. The land is truly managed for wildlife as the grains are strip planted and much of the land is in CRP, switch grass, sorghum, and grasses. The hunting service is operated by PINE SHADOWS.

How long have you been doing this? PINE SHADOWS has been guiding groups of upland hunters for nearly thirty years.

Why Dakota River Ranch?  “For many years we have leased our springers to various hunting operations in the Dakotas and have guided numerous trips to those lodges,“ said Mark Haglin, President of PINE SHADOWS. “Because of the cover types and diversity and the abundance of wild birds we have chosen Dakota River Ranch as our field site. The lodging facility is great, the food is outstanding and the hunting is the best we have experienced in the Dakotas.”
