A Grand Day of Pheasant Hunting

A typical day in the field begins with breakfast around  8:30 am, followed by a brief meeting to cover safe hunting practices. Following the meal, there is time to  sharpen shooting skills at the trap range. Then you will be transported to the field in time for the 10am opener (12pm opening week). Our guides select the hunting area each day based on their knowledge of local habitat, weather conditions and surrounding hunting pressure, to insure plenty of opportunities for a successful hunt.

Hunt over the ORVIS Endorsed dogs of Pine Shadows, and, if you prefer, bring your own hunting companion. Lunch will be served in the field each day; water and soft drinks are available all day. Let us know about any special dietary needs when you book your trip.

As the day comes to an end, we return to the lodge for pictures to preserve the day's experience. Your birds will be cleaned, packaged and frozen while you retire to the spacious lounge for complimentary cocktails from our fully stocked bar before dinner.

The evening meals feature many local favorites such as, prime rib, pork loin, pan fried pheasant/chicken, and South Dakota raised beef. "What about the Beef?" Dakota River Ranch features a very special futurity award winning steer. These steers are fed in excess of 200 days to achieve this type of quality and flavor. In comparison to the normal 115 day feeding period of commercial cattle. "You cannot get this quality in any 5 star restaurant!”

There is plenty available for even the heartiest of appetites, with side dishes served family style.

Top off your meal with homemade desserts and freshly brewed coffee or step out to the deck to enjoy a cognac-soaked cigar as the sun sets in the west.
