Life moves quickly in the 21st Century. It seems everywhere you look technological advancements are improving our way of life. Some things, however, still require that old fashioned touch. Here at Pine Shadows we feel the best way to produce high quality English Springer Spaniels is to do it the way we have been for over forty years, with a lot of hard work, patience and love for the dogs.
We take pride in knowing our dogs, making them a part of our extended family. This allows us to place our pups with specific families to ensure all those involved, both two and four legged, are satisfied. Taking the time to know our customers and our dogs has helped us to successfully place hundreds of dogs into loving, supportive homes over the years. We do not believe in rushing Mother Nature. It takes time to produce dogs with outstanding noses, trainability, retrieving skills, and dynamite personalities. It may take a little longer, but we think it is worth the wait.
Inquiries about upcoming Pine Shadows litters are always welcomed. It is our goal to provide you and your family with a top notch hunter and companion. We feel its personality and natural abilities are what make it an excellent hunter and pet. We do require a deposit to secure a pup for your family. The $500 deposit is completely refundable if for any reason a pup from Pine Shadows is not selected.
All our puppies are fully guaranteed (see the PINE SHADOWS Guarantee policy). Pine Shadows pups are all AKC registered with no restrictions.
The concern for many is Can a gun dog also be a house dog, family pet?. The answer is yes, if the our selection process is followed during the production and training of the pup. The steps in the Selection Process are:
1. The type of hunting the dog will be asked to do
2. The personality of the new family/owner,
3. Understand your expectations of a Pine Shadows Springer,
4. The living situation of the dog,
5. The training program established for the pup,
6. The personality you prefer in a gun dog,
7. The physical characteristics desired in the dog.
Owners Mark and Sophie Haglin invite you to visit their farm and kennels and see their dogs in action. Springer puppies are always around to delight both young and old. .
Puppies at Pine Shadows are a special affair. They are treated with the greatest care and respect because their heritage is our heritage. Bearing the excellence of Pine Shadows tradition they are expected to transcend the values and beliefs of our breeding system.
Acquiring a Pine Shadows English Springer Spaniel is an investment that will last for many years. It will provide you with a tremendous hunting partner and a beloved member of the family.
The Pine Shadows line of springers is the result of our breeding to produce easy to train gun dogs that are natural retrievers on land and water, and each possessing a superior nose for finding, flushing, and retrieving birds.
Since 1976 PINE SHADOWS has been producing superior English Springer Spaniels, providing gun dog training, field trial handling, Dakota pheasant hunts, and quality pet care.
Pine Shadows Imprinting was begun with puppies in 2002. The idea came from videos Mark watched about horse trainers working with newborn colts and foals. This similar process gets dogs accustomed human handling while building trust and a willingness to be taught. Sophie and her training assistants manage the imprinting process. From their first week of life each puppy receives five to 10 minutes of daily hands-on attention. They pick up the young springers, run their hands from head to toe, and lay fingers between the rows of teeth while teaching bite inhibition. As they grow the puppies are taken for walks in the field, taught discipline and are readied for field training.
Pine Shadows of Brainerd, Minnesota was among the first kennels in North America selected to become an Orvis Endorsed Hunting Dog Breeder and Trainer.
In 2003 Orvis introduced the Orvis Endorsed Hunting Dog Breeding and Training Program. The program is designed to promote and uphold the highest standards in dog breeding and training to introduce Orvis clients to the best breeders and trainers in the world, explained Perk Perkins, President and CEO of Orvis.
To establish the groundwork for a program worthy of the trust of their customers, Orvis spent a year compiling a short list of the best hunting dog breeder and trainers in North America. A team of experts visited these kennels to ensure that each operation met their strict requirements and standards. In addition to the field inspection, and the recommendation of industry peers, Orvis recognizes the following criteria as essential to an endorsed operation: AKC and/or American Field trial Registered; hip certification (OFA) for parents; thorough, documented medical records and updated shots on delivery.
In the quest to find the perfect hunting companion, Orvis is confident these operations are the best in business.
This is one of the most common questions I get from friends, customers and complete strangers. It is why we created the Orvis Endorsed Breeder and Trainer Program— to take the anxiety out of your search for a bird dog and to make it easy for you.
Your anxiety is well placed, too; after all, you are about to choose your companion for some of the most special times you'll spend in the outdoors (and perhaps the indoors) over the next 10 years. Most breeders are hobbyists. They breed three or four litters over one or two generations out of well-placed love for a great animal.
However, there are a number of breeders who are true professionals, who are acutely mindful of the drastic genetic variation in a breed and who breed for certain characteristics over many generations. I think we have picked the best and the most reliable of these breeders.
In joining the Orvis program, they have each agreed to uphold our customer-first approach to their profession: They guarantee your satisfaction with their dogs.
One bit of parting advice that my Dad gave me . . . pay little attention to the purchase price. When you get a good dog, you will be struggling to find ways to spend more money on a companion who has given you so much joy for so many years.
The puppy or started dog you have purchased from PINE SHADOWS is guaranteed for its hunting ability, health, and temperament, conforming to your lifestyle, and becoming an important member of your family. If the springer you have purchased from PINE SHADOWS does not meet your expectations, then PINE SHADOWS will:
Replace the dog with another puppy or a started dog, or
Refund the purchase price in exchange for the dog.
PINE SHADOWS may deduct a re-training/use fee on puppies and started dogs if necessary.
The above satisfaction guarantee will be fulfilled upon meeting the following conditions:
1.The dog must have been purchased from PINE SHADOWS.
2.PINE SHADOWS must be notified about your displeasure with the dog.
3.The dog must not have produced offspring.
4.The dog must still be in possession of the original owner.
5.The dog must still be alive.
6.The dog must be returned to PINE SHADOWS in good health at the expense of the owner with current vaccination records and signed AKC registration paper.
JUST A DOG
From time to time people tell me, Lighten up, it is just a dog, or That is a lot of money for just a dog. They do not understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for Just a dog. Some of my proudest moments have come about with just a dog. Many hours have passed with my only company being Just a dog, and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by Just a dog. In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of Just a dog provides comfort and purpose to overcome the day. If you, too, think it is Just a dog, you will probably understand phrases like Just a friend, Just a sunrise, or Just a promise. Just a dog brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. Just a dog brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of Just a dog I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. For me and folks like me, it is not Just a dog. It is an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. Just a dog brings out what is good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday people can understand it is not Just a dog. It is the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being Just a man or woman. So the next time you hear the phrase Just a dog, smile, because they Just Do not Understand.
