June 19, 2011 A very good Saturday
training yesterday. The weather was cooperative with cool temps and
good people. The dogs are running well and learning with each training
session. If you have acquired a new pup or need some training on your dog
come on out on Saturday mornings for a one on one session and also the
Wednesday evening sessions from 4:00 until dark. We also can schedule your
dog for more consistent in house field training this summer so that by fall
your dog is ready to go. There are some hunt tests coming up this
summer so if you want your dog to be sharp for those whether they be the
pointer, lab or flushing dog tests, contact us and we can
do that specialized hunt test training for your dog. June 7, 2011 The third fun trial for the
Northern Minnesota Springer Club was held this past
Saturday at Pine Shadows. With lots of help and good contestants we were able
to finish by early afternoon. Thanks There will be no training
this upcoming Saturday, June 11 as Mark is judging a field trial in Winnipeg
and Morgan is on the road picking up some training dogs. This week appears to
be a rather warm weather week so make sure your dogs are getting access to
plenty of fresh water. May 29, 2011 Taurus
left for Iowa yesterday with the Sichterman family.
They have had many Springers in the past and are
looking forward to a Pine Shadows pup for some Iowa hunting and a family dog.
We have some active, well socialized youngsters here, all doing well in their
training. Joannie is still doing the imprinting on them as well as getting
them retrieving on the platform, starting a little quartering with them and
working them through the tall grass. Check out our YouTube video clips on some of the Springers
and also follow us on Facebook with the frequent updates, pictures and video
clips. The video clips are unedited short training sessions where what you
see is a process of training. Watch for the little things the handler does
whether it is Morgan, Joannie or Sophie. A nice Saturday weather
wise for training yesterday. We had a number of folks here working their dogs
and visiting and talking about hunting. One of the guys picking up his
training dog commented that the hunting season is only 4 months away! So
true. Regarding the hunting
season, check out Daybreak, our signature hunting
lodge near Frederick, South Dakota. Organize a trip, get a small group
together and contact
Mark to book a hunt. We have some open dates in November and December. We
also can do some September hunts as well if you are interested in pursuing
early season pheasants. May 22, 2011 A rainy day today as was
yesterday. The Saturday morning training session was shortened somewhat
because of the rainy weather, about ten dogs. We did have some folks come up
and look at puppies. That is always fun. The litters of pups are all growing
up. So many are spoken for but aren't being picked up until later in the summer.
That gives us a chance to work with them and get them introduced to the gun
and to birds and socialized. The Target
litter is the youngest at ten days old. There are pups available, so contact us for selecting
your next hunting companion. Morgan was gone on Saturday
with Firearms Safety Instruction. Morgan is a certified firearms safety
instructor he has classes a couple times a year. Contact him if you have a
child ready for the gun safety class. We are planning some trips
to Daybreak this week to start on food plots and
removing old fences again. It is wet out there today but dry weather is
coming. Daybreak
update - The pheasants are nesting at Daybreak
and will be hatching any day now. I was out there this past Sunday and Monday
planting some food plots and checking the crops. There are many duck nests
around and I was seeing many rooster pheasants which indicates
the hens are sitting tightly on their nests. There was a dead raccoon by the
mailbox that was run over and I had to dispatch a skunk wandering in the
field with a shot from a Winchester Model 70 .225 at 87 yards. May 16, 2011 A great day in Minnesota today.
The sun is shining, the grass is growing and things are happening at Pine
Shadows. This past Saturday the NMESSC held its 2nd Fun Trial of the season at Pine
Shadows. Despite the rainy weather we had 43 dogs entered all the way from
Fergus Falls and Winnipeg and from the Twin cities area and Hibbing and
Wisconsin! It made for a wonderful day with the tent up, the cover good, the
birds OK and the kids events wonderful. The next club fun trial will be June
4th Target had
her pups last week. She had five boys and three girls. The tails were docked
and the litter was moved up to the kennel building just today. Target was bred to Toast so we are
looking for some easy to handle, stocky solid dogs. Speaking of dogs we
do have a very good selection of youngsters to look at both male and female
young started dogs. Many of them are not on the website yet. All of the
youngsters will be ready to hunt this fall so contact us with a request and
we will be able to develop a hunting partner for you by the end of the
summer. Fall hunting season is not far away. After a trip to Daybreak last week, we are working on the food plots
out there, the farmer has all the crops planted on
the north part of the farm. Those fields are all planted into wheat which
will make for an excellent hunting field by this fall. Consider booking a
hunt with us with your new dog. Contact Mark or Morgan
for hunt information. Wednesday evening training has started here as well
as the Saturday morning sessions. Come on out or call ahead for an
appointment. |

May 4, 2011 Sophie,
My wife,
Yolanda, wanted me to send this to you. Maya is doing great; I have her heeling on leash and quartering
training is going well…she stays nice and close…very responsive. She is
also having no problem sleeping through the night and taking care of
necessities outside. We love springers. David May 2, 2011
April 23, Easter Saturday A busy day for the Northern Minnesota Springer Spaniel Club. Our
first fun trial of the year was held at Pine Shadows. 53 dogs ran in
the 8 stakes that are offered. Norm, the deaf dog, took 1st place in the shooting dog stake
proving that an old dog can still perform. Walter and Boomer took 1st place in the Limited
Open stake and Cole Thiess's new stepdad Matt handled Ellie to first place in the Novice and the Field dog stake. This
was Matt's first time handling a dog. I think it made Cole quite proud to be
instructing his stepdad in how to run a dog! We even had a cocker
spaniel named Hank place 4th in
the Open. Hank was handled by
owner Nadine Kohn. Morgan will be running Hank this upcoming weekend at a licensed cocker trial open stake.
Joannie expanded her kids’
events with the Tracks Kit from Pheasants Forever. With the generous donation
from the Mark and Karen Rysavy family, NMESSC was able to purchase this kit
from Pheasants Forever. The kids made plaster mold tracks of various animals.
The kids also did the Easter egg hunt with the use of the GPS Units. A
big thank you to all who helped put on this wonderful event. April 18, 2011

and bird cleaning, Bruce Eide for the use of his 4 wheeler as well and Cole’s
driving, Dave and Robin Ablan for taking care of the marshals and shagging,
Michael Blassey and Terri Mayer as bird technicians, the local guns
Mark Rysavy, Steve Krueger, Peter Rainey, and Jeff Johannes, Tracie and Jayne
for getting supplies, Bob Schulke and Walter Zaplinsky helping with tear down
and pack up, Lynn Peterson for manning the headquarters, Stacy Avery for
helping with the marshaling and Sophie for being the field trial secretary.
It was a good day. The next trial for Pine
Shadows will be the North Dakota Open on May 5th. Morgan will be running
several dogs up there. On Saturday of next weekend the NMESSC
will host their first fun trial of the year. Start time is 8:30. Come on
up and run a dog in one or more of the 8 stakes plus we have the kids’ events
as well. April 6, 2011 Busy days here at Pine
Shadows. Two field trials coming up this Thursday through Sunday in
Minnesota at Major Ave Hunt Club near Hutchinson. It looks to be pretty good
weather, good cover and we are hopeful for some good performances. Three days ago, Lacy had her litter of pups. She had 7 of them with
3 boys and 4 girls. Things are looking pretty good so far with the pups. Lacy was bred with Toast. Another breeding we just
completed was Target and Toast. Target
will be due around May 12th. She will produce liver and white pups and they
should be on the larger size from 40 - 45 pounds on average. We do have pups available.
Many of our new owners are selecting pups at ten weeks old and then leaving
the pup here at Pine Shadows. We
raise, train and develop the pup into a young started dog, having it ready to
hunt by this fall. If you are interested in an option like that please
contact us. Daybreak barn renovations are coming along. Those of
you who hunted with us last fall will notice some major remolding in the
barn. We are putting in a ceiling, redoing some walls, pouring some concrete
and creating some very useable space. We have the food plot plans
coming together and looking forward to a good spring there. The fall hunting season
calendar has opening in the early October time frame as well as into later
November December hunting times. Give it some thought and put together a
trip. Connect up with Morgan or Mark and we can discuss a hunting trip for you and
your dog. March 29, 2011
Mark, Tipper is doing well
at her new home. Thank you for everything. Ray- March 29, 2011 A good trip for Ryan
Lamberg and his pal Gromit winning
the puppy stakes at the Nebraska and the Missouri field trials. |

March 27, 2011 Training this past Saturday
found the snow back on the ground but the cover was very good. We had a
wonderful crowd of people coming to enjoy the fire and work their dogs. The field trial season is
upon us with Morgan running in the Nebraska and Missouri trials. On Friday
during the Nebraska Open stake Neala
owned by JP Martin and handled by Morgan placed 2nd. Morgan also had Turner owned by Bob Schulke finish
the trial but did not place. Other dogs handled by Morgan were Thor owned by Steve Krueger, Matt
Johnson’s Diesel, and Buddy owned by Walter
Zaplacinsky. In the puppy stake Ryan
Lamberg handled Gromit to a 1st
place and Morgan handled Higgins
to 2nd place in the puppy stake. Both dogs ran again today in the Missouri
puppy stake with placements coming in on Monday. In the amateur stakes Ryan
ran Wallace and Mark Rysavy
handled Comet. All the dogs entered finished the 2nd
series so it was a successful weekend for the trial road crew. Upcoming this weekend is
the Minnesota Heartland trial held near Owatonna MN. Grant spent yesterday and
today at Daybreak
working on the remodeling of the barn at the Hudson House Complex.
Work will be progressing all summer as we continue to upgrade the facilities
at Daybreak . It
is not too early to be scheduling a group hunt with us. Contact Mark or Morgan to set a date
for your pheasant hunt. The next Saturday training
will be April 23, Easter Saturday. It will be the NMESSC
first fun trial of the season. The next three Saturdays are all scheduled
full with field trials in Minnesota. If you would like to attend a field
trial contact us and we will get you directions. Anyone is welcome to come
and watch. March 19, 2011 What a wonderful day of
training at Pine Shadows today. Many new folks with their kids here to see
pups and look at Springers. Sophie and Joannie showing puppies and telling
folks about all that we offer here at Pine Shadows. Morgan working training
dogs and showing off dogs and I was here as well. The fire was going but it
was a rather warm spring day. It is always nice to work
new dogs, meet new families interested in getting a Springer and watching
these dogs work in the field Our cover came back this week with the snow melt
and the birds were flying well. Thanks to all the
"regulars" who come by for training and gunning and planting birds
and visiting. A wonderful day. March 14, 2011
Ozzie had a
good trip home - handled it really well. He has made himself right at home.
Really enjoys the grass in our yard and has already been chasing rabbits and
chipmunks. The squirrels that live in our backyard are in for a rude
awakening as well. Slept fine in his crate with only a few whimpers now and
then. Raising a puppy is coming back to me now. Having fun - but I need a nap. Larry B. |

March 12, 2011 Morgan has just returned
from the first trial for Pine Shadows this spring. Having 6 dogs in the third
series and finishing up with a 3rd and 4th place was the result. Wallace took 3rd and Sota took 4th place. Wallace is owned by Ryan Lamberg and Sota is owned by Tracie Wilson and
Jayne Reinhart. The other dogs Morgan handled in the third were Neala owned by JP Martin, Tanna and Star both owned by Tracie and Jayne and Rueben owned by Lynn Christian. It was a great start for our
spring trial season. The Reacher pups are now 6 days old. The pups
will be moved up to the building this weekend. Reacher was bred to Turner
and she had 3 females and 6 males. They will be ready to go home in 9
more weeks. The Ransom x Buster pups are strong, solid pups going on 6 weeks old now. They will
be ready to go home in another month. Hope the snow will be gone by then. The past couple weeks has brought Mark and Lynn out to Daybreak for a couple trips. Snow is still quite deep out there but the birds are plentiful and strong along with the deer and turkeys. We have some projects starting out there this week with Grant doing some of the remolding of the barn. We are looking to upgrade the facility in the barn for more user friendly environment for the hunting guests. It is not too early to start thinking about a pheasant hunting trip this fall at Daybreak. February 28, 2011
Best Wishes to you and
Sophie. Howard Squires February 20, 2011 Nice day of training
yesterday. The snow pack has receded and cover is popping up so we were able The trial schedule is
coming together with a number of people getting their dogs ready for the
first trial in mid early March. The first litter of pups for the year will be
going home in a couple weeks. The folks who have deposits have been up
looking and we have been sending out photos of the long distance people. The
selection process is coming together as well and soon new families will enjoy
the additional of a new family member! February 14, 2011
Just wanted to share these
pics of our Lynch – He jogs miles with Marisa
(and it’s true love for sure) – ‘Crashing’ with Harry on
the floor at night seems to be their new ‘event’. We are praying that our big
snow storms will be fewer and far between – Harry and Lynch would love to be able to hunt more! Not bad fun for a couple of
old married folks – oh how me makes us laugh! Best Wishes – Carol p.s. film clip from hunt on youtube:

January 23, 2011 Another cold morning for us
here at the kennel. The dogs don’t seem to mind much as they enjoy romping in
the snow. We had a wonderful day of training yesterday even though it started
out at 17 below zero. The wind was calm and the hobo fire was warm so
it was a good day. It was a soup day for lunch. Sophie made some very good
potato soup and Tony had cream of asparagus soup. Along with some homemade
bread from Joannie and an apple pie dessert, it was a wonderful day.
Sometimes our lunches overshadow the training day. Sort of like that
commercial on how did you like the book and the answer is I didn’t read the
book; I just come for the pizza! This week saw some great
progress in the movement in the Pilot pups
and the Dove litter.
They get to spend some time in the training office each morning and both
groups are moving around quite a bit. We had some good progress on training
the trained retrieve into Bob the
water spaniel and George the
Springer was learning the place board. This week we will be sending off Lacy to Oregon to finish out the
hunting season at Ruggs Ranch there. She will join Molly and Dewey which
should prove to be a very effective hunting team. This week will find Morgan
heading to Texas to judge a trial and Steve Krueger also heading to Texas to
run in a couple of Texas trials. They will be out of the snow and cold
for a few days. Training still goes on here at the kennel with Mark, Joannie
and Jill running the dogs and keeping them sharp. Our Lacy will be bred this
weekend to Toast hopefully producing a litter
of pups in early April. January 18, 2011 Pilot’s litter
at play with grandkids.
January 14, 2011 Mark/Sophie – Just wanted you to know
that our first hunt was spectacular! Lynch
was responsive to all (but very few commands ) and performed extremely well.
We found every bird released plus two. I was impressed, as was our game
manager, who watched most of the hunt. He did this in very difficult
conditions (12-14 inches of snow and little wind) and I was emphatic that
this not be a hunt of 'fish in a barrell'. Running roosters and hens....this
little guy is good!.You guys are top drawer!! warm regards, Harry January 13, 2011 Just
wanted to update you on Pine: He
is doing great!! He has so blended
into our family!! He is very
loving. My son is taking him to
show-n-tell next week at school. Kate
my little girl asked me the other day if Pine
was her brother! lol Pine has become an inside dog. I never thought my husband would let us
have an inside dog, but he absolutely adores Pine. I
attached some pictures. We were just
messing around that day. Not really
hunting. Just getting out of the
house! Thanks
for all of your help! Janet

January 9, 2011 Yesterday was the first
Saturday training day for the new year.
The temperature was -5 degrees, very little wind, some deep snow,
but a very strong fire going for everyone to gather around. Thanks to Bruce
Eide for bringing out his snowmobile for making trails.
L-R: Thor, Tatum, Rebel Quartering was a bit
difficult for the dogs but they sure had fun. Steve Krueger worked his new pup Rebel, Michael Blassey ran a
youngster named Trap and two new
pups, Jack and Bandit had visits from their owners
and they watched as Morgan and Joannie ran the pups in the field. It was a
wonderful start for the Saturday training days as two dozen folks shared the
fire.
L-R: Wemedge, Pelli, Birch The Pilot pups are growing strong. Joannie has been doing the
imprinting with them this past week. They are learning that the human touch
is a comforting feeling. Dove's
litter will be moving up to the building from the house maternity pen early
this week. Sophie kept them at the house a few extra days to get all of them
better stabilized. January 3, 2011
Sam with Feathers and their first chukar. They are the two in the
middle of the photo. Others include Sam’s Dad and Brother and friends Ripley and Thicket. (Remember Sam and Feathers

January 1, 2011 Happy New Year to all from
Pine Shadows. With the new year come the planning for all the Northern
Minnesota Springer Club events, the licensed field trial spring circuit, the
training schedules and new pups! This past week has brought
on two litters for Pine Shadows. Dove
had her pups born December 29. She had 13 pups. Sophie has them on a feeding
rotation and careful monitoring of weights and vitality. Running a regular
nursing wing at the house right now. Dove
is a first time mother, bred to Buster
who is a first time stud dog for us (although Buster has no clue about the pups). Dove is relaxed and doing the best she can with her 13. A week before on December
24th Pilot had her litter of 9
pups. Pilot, being the experienced
mother she is, has her brood well established and in a growing pattern right
now. The Saturday training
session will start this upcoming Saturday January 8th at Pine Shadows. The
snow is deep, the cover is there, the hobo fire will be burning so if nothing
else come on up for some dog talk and work a bird or two on your dog. The Northern Minnesota
Springer Spaniel Club will be scheduling their annual awards banquet in mid
February. Details will follow soon. Daybreak
was a success for us this past fall. We look forward to a successful
hunt coming up in 2011 as well. It was a pleasure to have the guides who come
for training to be involved with the hunts in the fall. December 22, 2010 Winter is here in full
force and what a wonderful time it is. After coming from near perfect
fall hunting conditions we have been blessed with near record snow falls for
the month of December. The fall weather was perfect for the hunting season.
No rainy days, no cold days and no hot days, just perfect cool crisp mornings
and blue Autumn sky for pursuing the wildlife with our Springers. I hope you had a successful
hunting season and will continue through the winter getting out enjoying winter
hunts with your dog or just a walk in the woods. Our hunts at DAYBREAK
were great. We wish to thank all
the groups who joined us for the hunting season at DAYBREAK. December 9, 2010 Dear Haglins, I know you like to hear
about the dogs you have bred and sent out in the world to be great hunters
and family pets. I regret to inform you that Scout born from Pine
Shadows Trigger and Pine Shadows
Rue in March of 1995 was laid to rest this week. Scout was
a good hunter, but more importantly to us, a great family pet and traveling
companion. She was always so gentle with our ten young
grandchildren and will be missed by them. We retired her from hunting
five years ago when she went deaf and developed arthritis in her
back hips. Since that time she has made our annual trip from Minnesota
to Arizona, where we reside in the wintertime. She actually did quite
well until recently when she began a quick decline. She lived just
short of 16 years and we feel grateful for that amount of time. Thanks for providing us
with a great dog. We have not yet decided if another dog is in our
future, but rest assured, if we decide on another one, we will be asking to
recommend on of your dogs! Warm
regards and Merry Christmas. Jack and Avie Martin

November 29, 2010 Mark and Sophie, Just a note to
you to tell you about another success story and great family dog you have
bred. We purchased Dewey
(out of P by Wallace) about two years ago as a started puppy. From day
one coming back from the airport and stopping in a field for a potty break,
he has been a pleasure to handle and eager to hunt. We chan Even though it
is only his second full hunting season, he retrieves out of water as well as
on land. The neighborhood kids hide dummies in the backyard and play
games with him finding the bird—which he fetches back to them every time. Attached are
some photos of our recent Thanksgiving hunt in Northern California. Redi with our 7year old grandson
Aiden. Best Wishes for
the holidays, Mike & Dawn
