Hunts

As many of you know we opened DAYBREAK this past fall. DAYBREAK is our own signature hunting lodge located near Frederick, South Dakota. After nearly 30 years of guiding hunters in South Dakota and North Dakota we made arrangements with an Aberdeen land owner to lease land and lodging facilities on 6200 acres of prime hunting land 25 miles north of Aberdeen. The groups that had been with us followed us to DAYBREAK plus a few new groups.  We sincerely hope that all the folks who hunted with us had a wonderful time.

We added some new staff members including our house cleaning crew, Patty and Tara, our bakery expert Margie, our fill in cook for a weekend, Karen Rysavy and our bird cleaning man in Daryl. My sister Kathy Olmsted and her daughter Abbey filled in as kitchen and cleaning help through the fall. These additional crew members plus our great huntsman teams all worked hard and long hours to provide you with an enjoyable stay.

It has been a pleasure for Sophie, Morgan and me to bring our “dog people” with their dogs out to DAYBREAK. Friends like Mark Rysavy, Michael Blassey, Seth Merkins, Tony Cyr, John Pauly, Dave Snesrud, Trevor Sumption, Steve Krueger, J.P. Martin, Mark Sheflo, Bruce Eide and Dan Hogfoss. Our sons Travis and Grant were able to provide their expertise in dog handling and guiding for a few days as well.  And a very special thank you to my good friend Lynn Peterson who stepped in as head cook after the opening weekend and stayed with me the whole trip. His wife and our right hand lady at the kennel, Joannie, spent some good time at DAYBREAK running dogs, cleaning birds and helping Lynn cook. It was a team effort and a successful first year.

We plan to continue with another fall of hunting at DAYBREAK. We will be planning some improvements to the Campbell house, some additional remodeling of the barn on the Hudson House and more food plots and hunting habitat.

The goal of our hunting operation is to be able to provide a quality experience for our guests along with showcasing the Pine Shadows dogs.

Our son Grant will be heading up the “to do” list this winter and throughout the spring and summer. Projects include getting the basement in the Campbell house more usable, remodeling the first floor of the barn for more usable space and better organization, and upgrading the Post so it is more functional. There is quite a list of projects to complete. Watch the DAYBREAK web site for updates on the progress.

As always, if you are looking to book a pheasant hunt with us and our dogs contact Mark as soon as possible. Most of the groups have rebooked for the fall 2011 but we do still have some open spots on the calendar.

Field Notes

This past summer we had the honor of being selected as the Purina Breeder Profile and made the cover of the Purina Breeder magazine that was just published in January.

Last summer the writer and photographer, Adam Williams came to Pine Shadows and spent a couple days visiting with us, talking and interviewing us and learning about the history and philosophy of Pine Shadows. The article and photos as published brought a smile of satisfaction to both Sophie and I but also a great deal of humility in that there are many good breeders of fine quality hunting dogs in this country and for us to be a part of that select group is an honor.

Our goal all along has been to establish Pine Shadows as a good place to know and be involved with when dealing with hunting dogs. The Pine Shadows brand is who we are, what we promise and our ability and willingness to keep that promise. We sincerely hope that we have met your expectations in dealing with Pine Shadows whether it is for a puppy, a started dog, training, hunting or just general dog knowledge.

New Owners

We wish to welcome all of our new owners as now being a part of Pine Shadows. Without your decision to go with a Pine Shadows dog, we would not be able to continue raising and working with these Springer Spaniels. We appreciate you as friends. It has been mostly started dogs heading to new owners this past fall and earlier in the summer most of the new owners have been recognized in the daily news.

Some of the more current started dogs include the following: Molly and Dewey have gone on to a hunting operation called Ruggs Ranch in Oregon. Lynch went to North Carolina to hunt with Harry Ferguson and be taken care of by Carol. Quill will be going down to Olathe, Kansas to hunt with Jerry Mortick. Quill will join another Pine Shadows dog we called Flint now called Sophie. Bang is hunting in North Dakota with Darren Dobrinski.

A few Minnesota people, Curt Illies has Calypso and Owen Bohnsack has Ammo and John Boerger is hunting with Sniff. In Alabama Feathers has found a family of boys with Ben Smith and Bob Dixon has acquired Chex. Tig went out to California to enjoy life with Mark Osborne.

Gun Dogs

Description: Description: Description: Description: orvis%20edog   The trial season is coming up soon. The training involved with trial dogs is basically the same for all of our dogs but it does depend on the age of the dog. The youngsters just coming into their first puppy stakes will need some more board steadiness, training on longer retrieves, reinforcing the no bird command and working on the delivery. Many of these things can be worked on right now when there is snow on the ground, lack of cover and cold temperatures. Get the training table plowed out and do some routine simple retrieves off the table always reinforcing the come, delivery, hup and give. Teach patience in the dog, teach routine and work these drills.

A puppy coming into his first “big dog” stakes will need some brace work when one can get it in. If the training on the routine, quartering and listening to commands is all reinforced then the switch to brace work should be a minimal disruption in the training process. One thing we do with this now in the deep snow is to double up the dogs on the retrieving drill. Have a steady dog on the table and your youngster “first brace” dog on the table as well and teach them to wait their turn to make a retrieve. Of course this requires a second dog so if that isn’t possible, practice throwing the dummy and perhaps 2 out of 5 retrieves you go out and get the dummy and leave the dog there on the table. All this does is reinforce the steadiness and teaches the dog that you give the command to make the retrieve, he doesn’t.

With mature trial dogs this time of year is best utilized by doing repetitive drills with these dogs. Drills such as steadiness off the table, perhaps a few bucket runs, and mechanical training drills that instill correct behavior, strict obedience to commands and showing them that you are still the boss.

Timber’s Tip

TIMBER

What an experience DAYBREAK has been for all the Pine Shadows dogs this past fall. Many of my off spring were able to join with the older mature dogs to produce birds for the customers. The older ones like Lacy, Comet, Atlas and Zia hunted hard and rested even harder. A rising star was Molly, a little black and white power house. Lynch opened up and learned about wild birds; Axel developed into a wonderful hunting companion, easy to control and finding the birds. Toast showed his size and power in the field for finding birds and retrieving. It was great pleasure for me watching from above my niece Comet fetching ducks for Mark Rysavy as he was guiding a duck hunter. She would motor out into the slough and scoop up the ducks and return to hand and be ready for the next bird.

What a sight to see the talents of my offspring come out to do their thing.  The Pine Shadows brand of developing a tremendous hunting dog along with a truly great companion in the house and as a family member is so nice to see.

I continue to watch as new customers to Pine Shadows are welcomed into the world of the Pine Shadows Family. If you are a new owner of a Pine Shadows dog, please continue to send updates and tidbits of your dog. As always the staff is ready to answer questions and solve problems as they come up.
