Special Dogs

I feel remiss for not having written previously to report how fabulous Skip is and how much my family and I enjoy having him.  He has been a wonderful addition to our family and is an outstanding hunting companion for me, both for pheasant and in the duck blind.

I recently returned from an annual duck and goose hunting trip down on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and want to report that Skip worked wonderfully from blind and boat for ducks, and also retrieved a downed goose from the field...quite a sight and only wish that I had remembered my camera!  He is so versatile and his nose is outstanding.  We hunt together regularly throughout the pheasant and waterfowl seasons and he is absolutely great.

Greetings from Ohio. I am sending you proof that there are pheasants in Ohio. Dulce and I have been enjoying the pheasant hunting this fall here with friends who also have Springers.

Dulce has really acclimated herself to hunting the briar patches which are plentiful here. She has been doing a beautiful job of retrieving and hunting down wounded birds.

I am sure glad I made that trip out to Brainerd two years ago and ended up bringing Dulce back to Ohio. She has been a joy to our family and a wonderful hunting companion.

I hope all is well with your family and wish you all a blessed Christmas.

Hello Pine Shadows crew,

Just thought I'd drop you a quick note and picture on my first birthday.  My hunting partner's daughter (Nicole) cleaned her garage the other day and brought me a gift, my first grouse.  I like it a lot and my partner likes it because it forces me to grab the body and not a head or tail!  I'm enjoying quality time with my partner, he says I'm becoming much more attentive and following directives better.  I can't wait for hunting season!

Enjoy my photo,  Storm

Hi guys...

I went to McCollum’s Hunting Preserve this last week-end and had a wonderful time hunting pheasants...as you can see in the photo we had pretty good luck. The weather was kind of rainy but we had a great time...36 out of 50 birds so that was pretty good for my first official hunt.

I really like to retrieve the pheasants after they go down - I even take them from Lars’ dog and bring them back to Ron....that's good right?

I will let you know how the North Dakota pheasant opener goes - I've heard that the wild birds are a little smarter but I am certainly up for the challenge.

Oh yeah, Mom says I really do have an on and off switch - I go to work with them every day and just lay on my pillow in the office.  Hope to see you soon.

We heard from the Dixon’s who have Gwinner. He is hunting on their plantation in Alabama. Here he is on the wagon with Shane who drives the mule team of Bo and Doc. Gwinner gets off the wagon to flush and retrieve the birds that the pointers find.

The Waxbergs are really enjoying the raising of Bailey. They are learning to handle Bailey in the field. They especially like the camaraderie of fun trials and   group training sessions.

  2004 ESS National Field Trials

J.P. and Ali finished the National Amateur and earned a Certificate of Merit. This is a very special accomplishment for this team of JP and Ali because of the quality of the dogs and because of what it takes to finish the National.  Ali has so much trust in J.P. and they work well as a team.

Both Atlas and Fisher competed in the National Open for 2004. These two young dogs are products of our selective breeding process and will be solid breeding dogs for us for the next few years.

Mark, Morgan and Sophie,

Hi friends at PINE SHADOWS. I'm writing to tell you about my first Duck hunt and retrieve on opening day. My Dad ( Jim Cleary) was very proud of me. I did my first duck retrieves from the shore, and out of my new duck boat that Dad bought for me. I even did a double retrieve on two Teal.  See my attached photos. My dad tells me I'm a good dog, and we had a very nice hunting weekend.

See you soon,

Happy Holidays. We were in Barnard, South Dakota last weekend. Weather was 16 degrees and 4 inches of snow, a perfect hunting situation. Those in the group picture are Gary Andres, Troy VanDover and Grant. Dogs are Rigby, Hunter and Beary. In the other picture I am with Beary.

Hi Mark and Sophie,

As I have mentioned in other emails, Ice is doing great. Last Friday she flushed ten hens and two roosters. I’ll send some pictures to you this week.

I wanted to let you know that Ann and I would be very happy to be used as a referral for Pine Shadows if you would like. Your entire operation is A+.

When our oldest son, Travis, got back from London we scheduled a pheasant hunt with Tom Thompson at Traxler's Hunting Preserve. It was a snowy day but a great hunt. It is always a pleasure to be able to hunt with my boys. We thank Tom Thompson with setting up the opportunity to hunt at Traxler's. Here is Tom and his son, Blake, with Gus, Cook, and Kedra.

Here's the holiday update on Duke and Denver Kverstad. Duke is now nearly two years old. They both started training at PINE SHADOWS when Duke was 8 weeks.

When the duck season is over Bill and Trex go "Crabbing". Trex, who is a Trixie/Happy pup from last summer lives in South Carolina with Bill and Anne Chandler. He is out in the boat quite often and is very comfortable in the boat and only once, according to Anne, did a crab latch on to Trex. Trex will be in for a big surprise when the weather warms up and the crabs are up to full speed!

Rick Willoby and his dog Gus had a successful pheasant hunt in southern Minnesota. Gus is learning that he is supposed to hunt with Rick and not in the next field. He has developed into a great gun dog.

Stacy Avery and Caliber have had a great year. Caliber developed into a good trial dog in the puppy stakes and a great companion for Stacy. It was very rewarding for Sophie and I to watch the development of Caliber under the direction of Stacy.

Duke, a black lab, started coming out for training at about 8 weeks old. Duke would bring his owner out for weekly sessions on land, in the water, and with real birds. Homework was assigned for Duke, and Denver Kverstad, his owner, would carry out the assignments. Training progressed Duke to become a very powerful, stable hunting dog. Pictured in South Dakota in October, Duke was about nine months old.
